Bismarck House By Andrew Burges Architects, An Award-Winning Beach House And Urban Oasis

One of Bondi’s most admired homes and winner of a string of architecture awards, Bismarck House was designed in collaboration between owner Will Dangar, award-winning architect Andrew Burges and the interior design gurus at Design Daily. In the heart of South Bondi village, the two-storey home is oriented to the north and designed to forge a sense of place and a connection with the neighbourhood. Raw materials and sculpted spaces with organic curved lines integrate the house with the cactus and succulent garden with the majestic Bismarck palm from which the house gets its name standing sentinel on the northern side. Designed with sustainability at its core, pared back interiors are awash in sunlight with recycled limewashed brickwork, polished concrete and fine-set plaster bringing a luminous quality offset by textural finishes in linen, oak and steel. A creative design affords flexibility of space, designed to function as a four-bedroom home or two separate dwellings with a self-contained apartment occupying the front wing. The heart of the home features a striking curved skylight that evokes a sense of movement while automated skylights on the upper level capture the ocean breeze. Bold and strong yet serene and sensuous, this is a beach house like no other just up the hill from the beach and a stone’s throw to fantastic restaurants including Totti’s, Elva and Sefa Kitchen as well as wholefood cafes, pocket bars and organic bakeries.
