Once an old boarding house, now two modern beach houses… this compact block was knocked down and redeveloped by Sydney-based architecture firm, Nicholas Tang Architects. While one of these jaw-dropping homes is still occupied by the architect, the other neighbouring abode has just been listed on the market, and could be your new dream home (if you’ve got a spare $4.8 million, that is). Architect Nicholas Tang describes this home as a “contemporary beach house”. It’s everything there is to love about a quintessential beach shack – with epic ocean views, salty sea breezes, and just minutes from the beach – only with all the modern amenities one could ever desire and luxurious interiors that frame the outlook perfectly.

Inside, polished concrete floors are paired with exposed natural timbers like spotted gum for an industrial look, which complements and frames the panoramic views of sparkling Bronte Beach through floor-to-ceiling windows and doors at every end. “The view is superb. From each level, you’re treated to a 180-degree view from Bondi to the cemetery at Clovelly,” Nicholas tells us.

The modern exteriors are designed to integrate with the home’s idyllic coastal setting. Precast concrete external walls make for a chic facade while the top floor of the home is clad in zinc. “Zinc protects the home from the salt air, is incredibly durable, and requires no maintenance,” Nicholas says. And the home is as kind on the environment as it is on the eye. “Passive environmental design makes the most of the sea breeze, which reduces the need for artificial heating and cooling,” says Nicholas, adding: “There’s also 4.95kW solar panels on the roof.”

Despite the lot size being just 150sqm, each of the twin dwellings boasts four spacious bedrooms (three of which have their own balconies), three bathrooms, an open plan living, kitchen and dining area and a large garage. Multiple outdoor spaces reinforce the unparalleled connection to the outdoors and embrace the Australian way of life. “The views are seen and accessed from almost every space in the house,” says Nicholas. Three of four bedrooms boast a balcony, and the alfresco deck off the living room space is ripe for entertaining.

“A larger outdoor deck and pool area at the rear of the property is sheltered by garden walls, and makes for a relaxing and private escape on sunny days.” The pool is next level in that it’s filtered with minerals rather than chlorine, and has an attached cabana. Other notable features of the home include an entertainer’s kitchen with a four-metre island bench and Ilve and Smeg appliances, heated flooring, designer bathrooms, Reggiani lighting and Sonos sound systems, plus an external copper beach shower and board racks for surfers.

The first open inspection is taking place on Thursday 16 May. On 15 June, it’ll head to auction to be snapped up by one lucky buyer. Check out the full listing for 3B Pembroke Street Bronte here.
